First, thanks in advance for the help. I have an imac, with 10.4 tiger installed on it. For some reason, all my applications except safari and a few third party ones will not start. when clicked on in the dock they simply bounce once. Finder is affected as well, so I can't search for them and try it that way. I was going to reinstall OS X, as I saw on the forum that that helped someone with a similar problem. However, when I put the CD in it makes a wierd noise and doesn't start. When I put Disk 2 in, it doesn't make the wierd noise but it still doesn't start. I believe this could be because an application it uses to open cds doesn't start.

Put CD 1 in
Restart the computer
Hold the C key down throughout the startup process
It should take you to the first screen of the Installer. Choose your language.
Then instead of proceeding into the installed, go to the Utilities menu at the top, pull down to Disk Utility.
Choose the icon of your hard drive, and click on Repair Disk.

What happens then?
