We have a MacBook Pro which has turned off when a iPhone was plugged in. The machine is 3 months old, now if we put the power lead on that does not light up as it should to indicate it is charging. The machine is completely dead, and after trying Apple tech I was informed to call back during working hours.

Has anyone had anything like this happen? And if so give some direction as to what it might be.

Try resetting the SMC. Also, see the link for troubleshooting MagSafe adapters at the bottom of the CHARGING section of the following link. The link below should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions. If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you take the time to read it.
