I'm taking the plunge and buying an unlocked iPhone off eBay.

Has anyone else done this, and if so with who?

Basically, who can you guys recommend?

    Thanks!

Don't feed the eBay hucksters. Get one and do it yourself- it is EASY.

I don't mean to come across as rude, I appreciate the response and all but please read my post prior to responding.

I want to know who's bought one off eBay before, and from whom - since there are so many on there, and so much fraud these days.

So... you don't know anyone in the US that can buy you one from an Apple store? That's your safest bet, just in case it needs service or needs to be returned.

Im in the same boat as you JDT. I noticed somebody who seemed legit on eBay and would even unlock the phone for you (though it would mean him opening the box etc)... he was charging £320. Considering the iPhone will cost £270 here... it might be worth doing.

There are so many in that price range! I don't know where to turn!

I'm heading for the highest feedback, and someone who has sold iPhones before.

Another thing I've noticed is some sellers' have said the iPhone will remain unlocked even if the software is restored, provided its not above 1.0.2 (I think) - where as others have said ones its restored, it relocks. Once its relocked, can it be re-unlocked?

    God. Its a minefield!

I was going to go return my sealed 8gb iphone today (hoping for 3g in Q1 2008) but then I thought maybe some european person would like it. All I ask is for price of the iphone plus the tax I paid for and shipping to whichever country. I'll take a picture of receipt and iphone if you want. I'll only accept paypal too. Forgot to mention that I won't unlock the iphone for you that's a risk you will have to take yourself.

I'm very interested. To the point of just signing into my bank account online and checking that YES I CAN AFFORD IT!

Do you have an eBay account or any dealings elsewhere that show your legit?

Sorry to be so offensive, but you never know these days. I'm an established MR member, also in the Marketplace for both buying and selling, and I have an eBay account.

My PayPal is currently down at the moment, but I can use my family members, different name and address but same town, village etc - nothing dodgy.

    Thanks!

Just see what ebay seller has good reviews and a good feedback percentage.
Also when you use Paypal you're protected incase of fraud or other circuimstances. They'll refund you the money if you're not satisfied, all you gotta do is file a claim.

    Ask in the marketplace here.

The pure cost for an iPhone, in Canadian dollars translated into Pounds would be something like 260. Someone here would probably do it for 280ish. I'd even do it, save that I just did a bunch (started with a few, and then was deluged by requests) and I'm writing the LSAT next week and don't really have time to get down to Seattle and back again.
