i was using an older netgear and was getting 10-15 mbps on comcast.

i bought an airport extreme and my speeds went up and are now consistently between 75-100 mbps and this is with 4 + devices running off of it.

Best 99 bucks ive ever spent!

The 5th generation or 6th?

Yup. This is exactly what happened to me.

The 2.4ghz band is congested in my area. It might give better range, but the speeds are so slow. Once I hopped on the wider 5ghz band on my AEBS, my speeds went up tremendously. I ended up just turning off the 2.4ghz band on my AEBS and only broadcasting the 5ghz. Less interference from other wifi routers in the area.

Apple AirPort Extreme gets my whole hearted endorsement. Strong signal, drop dead easy setup. Only thing I set after using for a while we're the channels. I hard set the channels in the setup away from channel my neighbors use. Increased my distance even more.

Have Comcast which came with modem, which I disabled as WiFi router. Airport handling Apple TV, two Mac Book Pros, an iPad 2, two iP6 Plus, XBox, two hp Probooks, Sony laptop, and a hard wired windows desktop.

Fastest WiFi between Airport and iP6Plus at 300 Mbps. All devices show the ISP Blast speed at 50 - 55.

Another vote for ASUS RT-AC68U. The thing is stable and solid as a rock.

I read reports of latest Airport having just 3 Ethernet ports. If true, then it is laughable.

I have a netgear r7000 and have been very pleased. Best router I've ever owned range and speed wise b

love my Asus RT-AC68U

I use it with 6 laptops, my iMac and 6 phones, 3 smart tv's and 1 iPad and have had no issues. Easy to set-up and use. Wasn't cheap but for the price I paid I feel it was worth it.

I need a Wifi router that can handle 4 iPhones, Macbook Pro, Xbox One, 360 and a Wii U that will be a Christmas gift. My son has been complaining that his 360 is lagging or dropping and I have had some issues with my Macbbook Pro on Yosemite. My i6 will not stay on 5ghz and swithes to 2.4ghz and my Wifi speeds go no higher than 30mb's and usually run about 12-13mbs during peak times. I am using a Belkin right now and I need to upgrade to a better router that is not insanely expensive. Our house is all one level and about 1489 sq ft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've been very happy with the Apple Airport Express. It covers the whole house and it says it can handle 50 devices. We have up to 11 devices In it and it works great.

I have an Airport Express that doesn't give me the range that I need. If I get an Airport Extreme, can I take advantage of having two routers like using them together with one modem? Or should I just sell the Express?

I need some help guys. I ended up getting a 5th generation Airport Extreme and now the xBox One won't let it do chatting on xBox Live. It says our NAT is set to strict. How do I change the Nat to open? Ugh, what a pita

Xbox One fix, try this one. Didn't go through it but the title hints a fix for your issue.

Not sure why you picked AE over Asus, but I guess it's a personal preference. Although what I hate with AE is that there's not web interface.

Thanks! I did find this video and changed a few settings and was able to get it to work :) I chose the AE because I found one on CL in like new condition for $70 and with funds kind of low at Christmas time, I jumped on it. Other than that issue, it has been working great so far.

we just bought the asus rt-ac68p... love it so far!

we had an AE a while back but had to return it because we could never get the xbox working properly on it ...

all devices and the xbox one are playing very nicely together! WOOT!

When you say 5th gen, you mean you got the model that came out in June 2011? That's the 5th gen release date, unless you meant the 6th gen?

I have a 5 gen and a 2 gen. Use the 2 gen as an extender though I don't know if it does much good.

Have always had double NAT issues with the AE router, but I'm an idiot so take that into account.

I wouldn't mind getting a new router if I could actually get closer to my rated speeds in most of the house. I had looked at the new AE router, but it doesn't get high marks once you get outside of the apple community. I have the main router in the basement next to the modem and it has to reach up two more floors, so it gets a workout. I have the 5 gen in the basement and the 2 gen on the second floor.

They didn't find the price/performance ratio was that great and moreso considering the features excluded.

I dunno, I would still lean towards an AE just based on my experience.

Yes, the 5th generation unit ;)

I bought one ASUS RT2400 AC87U and returned it after 2 weeks. It offers really bad coverage of 802.11ac wireless connection and only moderate internal network connection.

Using the software iperf: https://iperf.fr/ to test the internal connection between two iMacs both of which are connected via AC87U using 802.11ac, one gets only a speed ranging from 3Mbps to 16Mbps. It is quite unstable!

I bought this router because I wanted a great internal network speed, e.g., iMac to iMac and iMac to AppleTV. This router really disappoints me in terms of this point.

I'm with Bt , I had all kinds of airports and time capsules over the years and they were a continual hassle , updated firmware really messing the things up , having problems with the wifi etc etc , things not working with it

Now we use the home hubs that Bt provide , they're much more reliable and compatible than the apple stuff ! hard to believe i know !! lol

I recommend the Bt HH3 rev B and the new HH5 , both very good

The correct model to get is ASUS RT-AC68U. AC87U has issues with 5Ghz wifi ac because Quantenna chipset drivers are buggy and not mature enough compared to Broadcom's chipset in AC68U.
