Yeah, but it will be fixed for free by reinstalling the OS...

I've already did that on the original HDD and it didn't fix it. That's the problem with sorting out software conflicts. It could be the OS or any update to any other app. It would take forever to isolate.

Then you'd be relieved to hear that it's probably hardware.

True. That would be simpler and quicker to fix.

But if it's software then my only hope is upgrading to leopard to hopefully fix it. Then i'm not sure how CS2 will run. In the end I feel like i'll be forced to upgrade.

There is a command that the apple techs run to hammer the cpu to test for over heating but can't for the life of me remember it. You could put a dvd on, or use handbrake to encode video

Maybe this one?

Code:
yes >/dev/null

Eventually you must run more than one time to use all of the cores / processors.

Well good news...(sorta).

Got a freeze on the 2nd hdd running 10.4. So i'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem.

For the thousandth time, its a broken stick of RAM!!!! Take one stick out and run on only one for a while, then swap them round and i guarantee you'll freeze when running one and not the other.

You can run on one stick of RAM, just fine, my PC only has one stick and its good to go, manufacturers just tend to sell them in pairs because its cheaper, 2 x 2GB is much much much cheaper than 1 x 4GB.

When you find which stick of RAM it is thats freezing, tell us and we'll show you where to get some more high quality RAM of the same price for a decent price that wont randomly freeze

No you can't. The dual-processor G5 needs memory to be installed in matching pairs.

He said he has 2 x 1GB stick and 1 x 512MB stick, so how is what your saying possible?

I'm using os 10.4.11 on a powermac dual 2 ghz, 2.5 gig ram.
Have you ever upgraded your RAM?
yep. maybe 2 yrs ago. Bought 2x1 gig sticks from crucial. Had a tech guy put them in.

So he's not running even pairs, perhaps we're overlooking something fairly obvious here?

I never said I had 1 x 512 mb. The G5's came with 2 x 256 mb. So sorry bud, but you're wrong and your call on "it's the ram!!!"..... I'll wait for the tech guy to answer that one when I take it into the shop.
