The title says it all really.

I offered to help out with my friend's spyware-ridden Dell Dimension 5000. I went to his house and reinstalled windows with the original disks and used the driver disks included. Everything works, except he has no sound from his speakers or headphone jack, which had both been working only a few hours previous.

Needless to say he is quite angry with me, and I am pretty desperate for a solution. I don't have the computer specs with me, but if some information is needed I can easily phone him to ask.

Thank you in advance

I'd first take a look at the drivers for his motherboard (if audio is on board), or for his soundcard and make sure they're upgraded to the most recent version for the operating system.

If they worked before, it's likely there is just a driver mishap somewhere and upgrading the driver -should- fix it. If not, we can work from there.

Have you looked around in device manager? That will give you an idea of what is installed on the machine.

Could someone please link me to the drivers (or other things?) that I should tell the guy to install, and please tell me if there is anything else you would recommend I should tell him to do.

Thanks guys very much!

I'm sorry to be so persistent, but I am going to his house tomorrow, and if I am unable to fix the stuff, I'm sure he will be pretty pissed...has anyone had the same experience? Any more advice?

IT DOESN'T WORK! I told him to install this but nothing happened...He is calling a 'computer guy' and I will pay the cost...I'm really upset about this...HELP IS NEEDED

Unless they have a third party audio solution installed my link should work. Failing that, it might be related to chipset. Have they restarted their computer? The drivers won't work until then.

He restarted...and did the chipset link...STILL NO SOUND!
I'm freaking out...

I'm going to have to hire him someone...does anyone know a good guy near Earls Court (London) ?

You tried other speakers or headphones? What does the Sound Manager (or whatever it is by the clock) have its settings at?

Did you look in Device manager to see if the drivers are installed?

Here's the thing...the guy is no computer guru, and I asked him by phone to look at device manager to see if there were any '!'s or '?'s - he said no. I then told him to look in Add Hardware and look for things with 'audio' or 'sound' in the title. He came up with: USB audio device , Legacy audio drivers, Audio codecs and Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit

Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
Did they install it or Dell? I'd check Creative's website. Yes, I tried to do the work for you.

Are there any unknown devices listed in Device Manager?
