So she couldn't get it to restore, something happened to it. I just got it restored now but she doesn't have a SIM card.

Can I use my SIM card to activate it and then take it out and put it back in my iPhone? What would that do?

Ah, well stupid me. I tried with my sim card from my iPhone 4. Microsim card. This iPhone is a 3G. :)

I went to an ATT store and they put a sim in for me but wouldn't give me one. Now I'm having a heck of a time trying to jailbreak. Do you need a sim card in there to jailbreak to begin with?

Okay. So far Limera1n and Greenpoison wouldn't j/b it... I j/b my iPhone 4 in about 5 seconds using Limera1n but no go on the 3G so far. I am trying pwnagetool now but I think I messed up. It said to restore using the custom ipsw file it created for me. Do you double click this file to restore it?

Well, now I'm back in the same boat I was before. As soon as I was done with pwnagetool, iTunes started back up and before I could quit, it started restoring. So now I have an iPhone 3G that's stuck at the "no sim card" screen! Dammit all to hades, man! I was almost there fixing this bloody thing and now I am stuck again.

Maybe ATT can put that sim in there again for me. Anyway, I bought a new sim card on ebay for a whole whopping three US dollars, so I'm gonna see how that pans out.

Now, one website is saying that an iPhone 3G with iOS 4.1 can't be unlocked? I was hoping to get this thing j/b and unlocked for this woman. Am I up ***** creek now?

I already updated to 4.1...

She changed her mind after fact...

How would I downgrade this now so I can unlock it?

changed her mind?? did you know see that coming?? lol

anyway is she using AT&T? if so dont worry about unlocking. now if she wants to go to T~Mobile then you might be in trouble for a few weeks til the 4.2 comes out and hopefully an unlock option.

so she was obviously jailbroke before. do you know if her shsh files were saved in cydia? you need to download tinyumbrella and see if they were saved. if so you should be able to downgrade and then start all over. but that link to f0recast that applejuiced provided worked cause I checked it.

I'm not sure if she jailbroke before, most likely yes but that was when she was on ATT. I think she said she bricked it when she tried to jailbreak but I am not sure. Whatever she did, the phone wouldn't even turn on.

I assumed she was still on ATT now, otherwise I would have asked more questions. I managed to get it into DFU mode and itunes updated it.

if she has been on T~Mobile for a while then she had to be jailbroke cause you have to jailbreak to unlock. try the other suggestions.

I downloaded 3.1.3 from your website. And it looks to be restoring from that. Does this restore the baseband to an unlockable status too?

if your shsh files were saved then yes you could get an unlockable baseband. I have been successful backing down some 3g iPhones to an unlockable baseband but have had no success in the last week or two unless the shsh files were saved.
