Help. Frozen external display in FCP

Hi guys. I've just developed an odd problem while editing in FCP 4.5. When I play clips in the viewer, my external display freezes. If I stop playback, the external display jumps to the frame where the play head is resting. If I drop a clip into the timeline, the external display plays normally. Does ANYONE have some advice for a very frustrated person on a deadline??!! Thanks.
