Hey guys so my friend just returned her macbook to the apple store because it was broken . The apple store gave her a new one ..

She told me she's worried because she forgot to delete her mp3 files on the macbook she returned and they happen to be pirated mp3s? Will she get in trouble ??

Unlikely, as the Apple Store employes receiving the Mac will have better things to do, and if they find something and report it, they will have some explaining to do.
Your girlfriend can try to go back and ask for her Mac in order to copy data off from it and then delete it, if she is that worried.

Do they hard reset them when they returned it to the official apple store? I heard they recycle them and use for refurbish products?

They will certainly wipe the HDD/SSD in order to reinstall Mac OS X (or put a copy of it via other means), but if they actually delete the data (meaning overwriting it during the wipe, which will take longer (4 hours compared to 1 minute), I don't know.

Apple have far better things to do than report your friend. They may consider the machine for refurb. Or as you say, strip it down to its component parts.

Either way, I can't see any real problem apart from my dislike of ripped off music ..... ( check my profile )

You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Not only do they not care, most of them probably pirate media themselves, and they will wipe the HD because they are going to sale and/or utilize those parts so it will be necessary for them to be in like new condition.

Yes, they will do a complete RESTORE FACTORY NEW, so that the new owner does not benefit from your MP3's. Besides, there really isn't a way to find out where you got those MP3's from, right?

I was just looking under GET INFO about my last MP3 song purchase from Amazon, I don't see anything about it being purchased from them.

All returned hardware like computers & iPhones are packaged and shipped directly to the facility that does all refurbishing. They wipe all data, refurbish the unit and it's then ready to be sold. They don't have time, nor do they care what's left on the device. You have nothing to be concerned with.

Actually, they could probably get in a lot of trouble if people started to know Apple employees start snooping around your HDD. You're probably okay with that porn history "your friend" didn't delete either. :D
