Help!!!! - I have a 14 and 16 and can’t decide

Warm doesn't equal overheating. With your logic I guess iPhones overheats every time it's charged.

Ya I mis-wrote that. I didn’t mean actually overheating. I meant, getting overly warm / hot to the touch / make my palms sweaty.

I tried the 14' MBP earlier this year and having had 13' MBPs for years, I found it to be almost identical. What I did notice was that it did get warm to the touch with what I was using it for. I decided that I would instead go 16' MBP. The screen was just too amazing to pass up on and I noticed that for the same tasks, the 16' was cooler and ran the fans less for what I was doing.

For me personally I decided to sell my iPad Pro 11 and justify the higher cost of the 16' MBP because of the screen. A month down and I don't regret it. This thing is a keeper and I absolutely love it. Yes, the larger laptop is noticeably heavier and larger to carry around but it has much better thermals and the screen makes it worth every penny for me.

I noticed this as well. The 14, compared to the 13 M1, ran pretty warm. The 13 M1 is actually quite an amazing machine, cold to the touch, just like the 16, which is what I ended up getting. It is larger, thicker and heavier but I never have used laptops during transit (I have an 11 inch iPP for that). I do however take laptops with me on trips and use it in the hotel, work conferences, job sites, etc. and under those circumstances, where I don't have access to an external display, the extra screen real estate comes in really handy.

This is one reason why I ended up with the 16. I still have the M1 13 and had planned to sell it immediately upon delivery of the 16 because I was contemplating a dual monitor setup to replace my 34 inch 5K2K, but I never pulled the trigger on that setup and now, I'm waiting for an ASD to arrive, just to see how it stacks up against my 34 inch. I'm actually wondering whether I should just keep the M1 13 because it's a fantastic machine, cold to the touch, amazing battery life (much better than the 14), small and thin form factor.

I’m so impressed with my 16 MBP Max. I did a 4 hour Zoom meeting last night and it was cold as a cucumber. Max temps were 45C. Fans at zero. Battery had 45% left at the end. My past Macs would run hot and I had to have them plugged in for sure.

Agree, but everyone is different. My niece who is 5’5”, probably weighs under 120 surprised me by getting the 16 over the 14. If you can handle the extra heft and footprint, 16 is the clear winner

One more thing, when I used to own the 16" it felt more like walking around carrying a TV with me, outside of having it in a bag.

The 14" feels more like a tablet or a School Notebook.

Spent my first day in the studio (rather than on the road doing smaller sessions) really diving in and pushing the 16” today. And it’s a beast. No issues. No hiccups. Pushed a pretty big logic session with Tons of plugins. Some Rosetta stuff but most native stuff. Was still snappy. Fans were on but inaudible. Wasn’t overly warm. Running external 38” monitor.

I tried to go back to my 16 core 2019 Mac Pro, but the M1pro just felt overal so much faster and snappier, even when running large sessions, I couldn’t do it. Looks like I’ll be selling the Mac Pro, I’m sure for a big loss.

try running your workload with low power mode on the 14 and see if it is quiet enough. performance is generally not a noticeable difference.
