The blue folder one is the default & 'correct' one for Leopard.
The previous one is probably Tiger. Did you upgrade to Leopard recently?

If you want to change it, you need to have a replacement icon. Do you?

No, I started with leopard and I haven't updated anything except for recent apple updates. Please, how do I obtain a replacement icon?

Also, thank you so very much for your patience. I learned more from you in the last hour than I've ever learned from our on-staff help desk. I can't tell you how grateful I am.

If I drag my applications folder to my dock, the same happens. I think it just has a different dock icon than the global icon otherwise.

Still confused

Hello -

I followed this conversation thread, but it does not seem to work for me. I acceidentally dropped my "Applications Folder" off my Dock when I first got my Mac and it dissappeared. When I put it back, instead of assuming the Applications Folder logo, it took on the logo of the first application in my Applications Folder: the Address book. Now, my desktop permanantly has the picture of the Address Book intstead of the picture of the Applications Folder.

How do I fix this? When I follow the instructions above, this does not fix the problem.

Could you give more detailed instructions? Where do you right click on applications folder? I couldn't find the menu? This drives me crazy too!

Actually, that's the wrong term...

all you have to do is right click on your applications folder and in the menu check "folder" under "display as"... hope that helped!
When it's in the Dock, it's not a folder any more, it's a Stack. Right click on any Stack in the Dock, and you'll see a contextual menu. In there, select "Folder" under "Display as" instead of "Stack". Apple used "Folder" in this case to describe the icon, just trying to confuse the issue with terminology.

my applications icon in my dock is covered by an address book icon. really strange.

i can see the applications blue folder just slightly but the addy book icon covers it.

What's in the dock is called a "stack". It's basically a folder, but Apple has chosen to display the icons all stacked on top of each other instead of the folder icon by default. You're actually seeing a different icon behind the Address Book icon, not the Applications folder icon.

Go to the Applications stack in your dock, right-click (or control-click) on it, and under the "Display As" header in the menu, choose "Folder" instead of "Stack" and you'll be all set.

None of this appears to apply to the current version of Snow Leopard. I've been trying for over an hour to get this corrected, and no luck.

Why is the Mac OS so horribly complex? I thought it was supposed to be user-friendly? Windows is so much easier ...

You are panicking. The fix is easy. Just highlight the Applications folder (not the one in your dock) and then do a File, Get Info (or a command+i key command). When the Get Info pops up highlight the icon it the top left corner, then click on the 'delete' button and your Application icon will revert to it's original icon. Easy!

I just noticed that the icon for my Applications folder has been replaced with an icon for a different folder. (I was adding new icons to some folders the other day and apparently wasn't watching what I was doing closely enough.) Anyway, how can I restore the Application folder icon back to its original state?
This happened to me. it was replaced with the next icon. It's no big deal, however, I want my A folder back on my dock. I did try looking for it as suggested, but it's not there. Any other suggestions?

Go to the finder and locate your Applications folder. Get Info on it (Command-I) then proceed to selecting the little folder icon on the top left. Cut (Command-x) and your original icon should be restored.

It is not in my finder. I've tried searching as well. And my trash has been emptied

You just quoted post #2, from 2005!
You're saying that your entire Applications Folder has gone missing?
I thought there were safeguards that prevented that from being deleted, but, not at my Mac to test that.
Do you know the exact name of something that is/was in the folder? If so, search for that.

To restore the Applications folder icon to the Applications folder in the Dock, just right-click the folder in the dock. In the "Display as" section of the menu that comes up, change it back to "Folder" instead of "Stack."
