I'm posting this from my HP Laptop, as I am unable to use my imac. I have a late 2012 running Catalina and and it's been reasonably OK until yesterday, when it started to play up. The first sign of trouble was when I went to log on and put in my password. I typed the first couple of characters but then it was as if I had held my finger down on the keyboard, and it put in an endless stream of dots which I could not stop. I switched off and rebooted and it was OK for the rest of the day. Today, however, it was much worse. Pages took ages to load, and this problem of unwanted characters had spread to include the words put into search bars. Closing pages has also become very difficult. Changing the mouse and keyboard had no effect. Any advice appreciated.

Well, thank you for your suggestions. So far, so good. I reset the NVRAM and everything seems OK, now. Much appreciated.

Just to let you know that things are still fine. I think I can put this one to bed, now.
