Hey Cali. Did you replace your optical drive with the UJ845? If so, how difficult would you say it was?

I went to iFixit but didn't go through all the many steps in the process.

Look forward to your thoughts on this.

I replaced quite a few.

The ibooks and 12" powerbooks are about equal in difficulty for one reason...

so many screws. That's really the only big hurdle. The sheer number of screws!

You really have to use two egg cartons and mark the screws carefully as you take them out.

The reason I replaced the optical drives on the iBooks was because once you get it open, you might as well upgrade the hard drive and the optical drive at the same time!

Thanks! Very helpful.

While searching for a SuperDrive, I've noticed that both the UJ-845 and UJ-825-C claim to be compatible with my iBook, but have not found a definitive answer on this. As I recall, iFixit recommends the UJ-825-C.

Do you know which is the better or compatible choice?

These drives are going on eBay for between $8.99 and $200. Crazy as always.

Get the highest UJ number you can get the 845 is a dual layer burner, the uj846 is even better. The UJ 845 was standard in the iBook 1.42ghz as I recall. The UJ 825 is an older dvd burner. UJ 846 standard in final revision Powerbooks, but should work in an iBook just fine.

Don't go for the 825, unless you can find one brand new.
