Hi everyone!

I´m having troubles identifying a G5 i saw for sale online here in Argentina. Here´s the "about this mac" picture:

D_NQ_NP_626760-MLA46128685451_052021-O.jpg

It can´t be one of the earlier dual processor models, because of the DDR2 memory. I understand it can only be a Dual Core or a Quad. The problem is that being a Dual it should say "Dual 2.0GHz PowerPC G5", and not "2x". The only "2x" G5 that use DDR2 memory is the Quad. Am I mistaken? So what is this? Custom configuration?

Thanks in advance!

I created an account just to reply to this, lol.

I believe this is the late 2005 PowerMac11,2. It had two 2 GHz G5 processors by default - it was not dual core - and DDR2 SDRAM. Edit: Nope, I'm an idiot, it switched over to dual core for the 2 GHz model. Hmm.

Haha thanks for registering just for this. I believed the same at first, but no match. According to everymac.com and mactracker, the only G5s with DDR2 are the late 2005 family. And those are the Duals and the Quad. I´m scratching my head...

It's Late 2005 2.0 DC. About this Mac says correctly 2 x 2.0, it never says "Dual Core" in 10.5. The same with Quad: it says "4 x 2.5 GHz".
Ok, thanks, i´ll take that as true, but Leopard´s about this mac box DOES say "Dual" in every Dual Core 2005 G5 i´ve seen. So why these variations exists is still a mystery to me.

All late 2005 models were dual and quad-core - 11,2 came in 2.0, 2.3, and finally the quad. You can tell by the long white stripe on back of G5. Those are the last models. Quad was only one with LCS, rest were air cooled.

Dude you aren’t an idiot - you had a brain analism for a sec.. it happens to all of us :)

It is - if you want to mod it, you can.. I did that on my Quad to say Duel Core 4x2 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
Yes, i know, i have all my ppc´s "about this" mac modded with custom pictures, but the vendor of this particular machine doesn´t even understand what a ppc mac is, he believed he had a mac pro. I highly doubt he could be able to do something like that, which requires messing with some system files. Neither is a system´s language localization. I run Leopard and Tiger in both english and spanish and the system profiler stays the same. Maybe it has something to do with different revisions of the processors and Leopard seeing that and name them differently? By the way, sorry for my english 🙃

Maybe you could ask for a screenshot of System Profiler/Hardware Overview. That would take care of the discussion, I think.

Apology unnecessary: no te preocupes - tu escribes en Ingles muy bien! :)

Off-topic: as someone who is British, I often notice that people who speak English as a 2nd language apologise for what they mistakenly think is a poor command of the language, when actually they're usually very fluent.

Bienviendo! ;)

Yes, i did that before asking here, but no answer yet. Maybe he doesn´t know how to access system profiler or doesn´t want to bother, who knows. He seems to be a little illiterate on computers.

Muchas gracias amigo!

People on this particular forum are really nice. I love PPC and in part that´s because the community surrounding this machines is awesome.

English (okay, American English) is my first language.

Spanish is my wife's first language.

My wife is often yelling at me for my inability to communicate a concept or idea in English when I speak to her.

Take that as you will. ;)

Does the seller provide only this picture in his ad?
You can differentiate models by the look of open case or back of it.

Late 2005 has one big "G5" on CPU cover, earlier versions had 1 or 2 small ones.

On the back of case Late 2005 has long, narrow, vertical plastic antenna cover. Previous versions have just regular cheese grater-like mesh. Ports layout on the back are different as well).
Perfect example here (from the left, standing ones: Mac Pro, Late 2005 G5, pre-Late 2005 G5):

And of course DDR2 is always Late 2005.

Yes, there is a picture of the back. It has the long plastic stripe and the layout of the ports are correct. It´s a late 2005! I think I´m buying it!

Thank you 666sheep (btw i like your profile pic ;))

That's not correct, there was also a dual 2.7ghz that was water cooled, though that came in early 2005., As a 7,3... I think I still have one of those...

My guess is this one. Dual core 2.0 ghz a1177.

I have this machine and aside from its obvious OS X Leopard limitations, it is extremely solid even in 2021. Great box worth investing in maxing the ram to 16gb and dropping in a 128gb SSD boot drive.

Hmm.. I disagree.. For some reason the Quad G5 and the DC 2.3 is much more powerful than the 2.0 ghz. Really, anything less than a Quad or the 2.7 is not worth it at all, due to the way internet is today. It seems wrong to state, that a Quad G5 2.5 and 2.7 G5 dual processor machine CANNOT handle the web, the morons who made the web the way it is are responsible for such machines not being able to run it correctly. No excuse. Even a Pentium 4 4ghz or 3ghz can handle the web with no real issues, why the G5 ? Why PowerPC machines ? I call it an attack on PowerPC and retro machines which aren't really that retro. 2.5 quad and 2.7 should be able to even handle 1440p video.. There was time 3 years ago where LWK played 1440p video on youtube with the Quad. Now, it has to play it at less than 1080p.

Again, this is my own opinion. I am not saying anything bad here, just our PPC machines G5 2.5 Quad and 2.7 are being robbed of running the net fine. InterWEB seems to fix this problem.
