My guess is this one. Dual core 2.0 ghz a1177.

I have this machine and aside from its obvious OS X Leopard limitations, it is extremely solid even in 2021. Great box worth investing in maxing the ram to 16gb and dropping in a 128gb SSD boot drive.
Yes it is. I bought it. ;) It´s a dual core 2,0ghz. Beautiful machine. Pictures coming soon!

Here it is. Arrived yesterday. It was dirty as hell. The innards were full of dust. After the cleaning, the system now sees two extra memory sticks for a total 5,5 gb of RAM. I erased the hard drive and installed Leo from an USB stick. The installation was fast. I´ve modded it with a slight modified version of Leopard Rebirth (adding San Francisco font and reverting the About This Mac window to default). This baby is fast. YouTube works fine within the browser (InterWeb PPC G5) at 480p. Overall i´m very happy with it. Bought it REALLY cheap. An ssd and two extra 2gb dimms are arriving on monday. This machine will be my main music production workstation with Logic Pro 9. Any upgrade recommended beside the obvious ssd and ram?

Very good, but 480p ??? 3 years ago I was able to watch 1080p and some 1440p video using LWK. And I am sure then the 2ghz G5 Dual core could play 720-1080p ? My video card in the g5 is the Radeon x1900xt and it played 720-1080 and depending on codec 1440.

Yeah, 480p. Didn´t test higher resolutions yet, i´m busy installing apps right now :). I´ll do a proper test later. But InterWeb PPC (being TenFourFox based) plus the javascript´s bloated YouCrap modern site is not a good combo for HD smooth video playback even for my Core2Duo early Intels. I´m sure LWK could do a better job since it´s so lightweight, but as you already know is very outdated, so i avoid using it. However, 480p is fine for me. Being able to watch YT within the browser on a PPC without the need of a workaround is great, none of my G4s are able to do that, including the Dual 1,25ghz MDD. So i´m happy with what i got. Retrocomputing is slowly starting to live some kind of golden age right now, and more projects to take our machines back online are being started everyday. The web 1.1 iniciative of this forum is great. Frogfind is great. I love Cornica. And the list goes on. Taking care of the usability of our vintage machine is in our hands. Do we want to go online? Ok, let´s code a whole world of friendly sites for them. F*** Google and social media. Really, who needs them? Like many people here, i miss the old web and it´s simplicity. PPC Macs are one of the coolest, finest computers ever made. Fifteen years after their final iterations were released they are still here, their are still so useful machines (i do all my professional audio work on them by choice) and we are going to give the battle for them for many years more to come.

That looks magnificent, congratulations! The serial number shows this was built in late April of 2006, so it is probably amongst the last models Apple built.

To keep that G5 running for many more years, one of the first big things you might plan to do is to disassemble it and to clean everything out thoroughly (like the fans, the power supply unit, the backside of the logic board, and so on), before applying new thermal paste to all the heat sinks. This maintenance should keep your system running cooler and happier for many more years to come. :)

Thanks! I did that. There was an awful big amount of dust, everywhere. After the cleaning, the system inmediatly recognized all the memory sticks (prior to that it only showed 4gb). New thermal paste for the heatsinks is a good idea. I´ll do that!

When you take out your logic board, you’ll get to see just how dirty the backside of the logic board is! It’s incredible.

Hah, speaking of a1177's, my software raid0 hiccuped today with some problematic boot-freezes at the apple logo. Just realized I have some sensitive software on here that I need to back up and retire the spinners on this particular box. Time to clone this puppy to my NAS before something is lost.

It's been some years since I had a G5 - I'd be interested to know what maximum Youtube resolution yours can comfortably play - as standard and perhaps with NinjaKit/Greasemonkey/Viewtube in LWK.

I´ll test that and let you know. Using InterwebPPC i can´t go beyond 480p and still have an enjoyable experience. At that resolution, once the browser has finished loading the page, the video plays flawless. At 720p it stutters, is not unwatchable, but i´d recommend using any of the workarounds instead (including yours ;)). Haven´t tried LWK yet, but my guess is that performance should be on par with TenFiveTube in standard mode (pretty solid 720p playback). NinjaKit + Viewtube is actually my workaround of choice for my 12" PowerBook and it does the job for 480p, so 720p shouldn´t be a problem for the G5, but i´ll do a proper test and post my results later.

Other than with YouTube, the machine is very fast. Today i did an audio render test using Cubase 5. The G5 vs an Intel Core Quad running Windows 10. The same Cubase project was loaded on both machines (25 audio tracks + 15 midi tracks playing vst instruments) and the difference in render time was minimal (roughly 15 seconds). Very impressive.

If you haven’t tried it already, the PowerPC Media Center (PPCMC) 7.2.5 is pretty handy to have around for streaming YouTube clips.

I wonder if the Russian owners of the site have noticed a mysterious increase in the traffic of the site, since the entire powerpc community is using their servers to watch YouTube now :p

I have the same Powermac in spanish also, it's a dual processor..

I was thinking than I was the only Argentine in this forum.. Nice to see some compadres hunting PowerMacs.

Recently I got the conclusion than no ones know the price, they only argue than "it has the apple logo", so the price can go higher.

I bought two powerbooks g5 15" for about 2500 pesos (15 usd) each one, "non working" condtion.

I'm a sysadmin and I use a 12" as a daily driver, I can ssh to anything, you can use ethernet and console, macports are a great deal in Tiger

I like to reflect on this review from the time....87 tracks of audio!

They have as I have a friend who is the sys admin there. We also have a location in Kyiv.

Absolutely beautiful machine that 2.0 DC. I have a similar 2.3DC that is my last purchase of G5 sidetops. Love them a lot, and they are fast.. well kinda... Lol.. either way, it's the easiest of the faster later G5s to live with. Congrats on your aquizition. ;)
