Help! I'm ready to KILL iPhoto!

I am really becoming fed up. Even when I have my external hard drive connected and can direct the software to the file, I continue to receive the dreadful "Volume Can't be Found" message and the subsequent pinwheel of death. Please help!!
 
Hold down Command and Option when starting iPhoto. This will give you several options to rebuild your library.
 
Rebuilt library---new problem arose

Rebuilt the library--created a new one to start from scratch with new photos. Created my first album with photos in new library. Only now, I can't export without iPhoto crashing. Each time I click "Export" the app hangs and then beachball of death and must force quit. 😡
