The other day my iMac would not start and there was this white screen with a flashing folder that had a question mark on top of the folder. Take it in to the Apple store and they want to replace the entire drive, and will try to save the info on the disk...."try".

It will be 2-3 days before the drive arrives and I am trying to find a way to save all the data. I do have Time Machine but for some reason I turned it off back in June so I need to find a way to obtain the data from June until now.

Under the disk utility the drive will not mount and I asked about some software that would help find the drive but he didn't think there was anything out there. I asked about data recovery and he said it would cost around $1,000.00.

    My questions:
    1. Any suggestions to getting the disk to mount, so I can back it up?

    2. Any solid companies out there with an excellent rep. (that dont charge $1,000.00) to handle data recovery?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I think your drive is goosed, if apple can't recover then it probably would have cost a lot to do. Next time don't switch off Time Machine :D

Just ask that they save your old drive. Go and buy a external enclosure for it.
Then hook it up to your mac, firewire or usb. If it's not totally hosed. You might still be able to get it to mount. You can retrieve your data that way.
