Help installing a new HD

I just installed a new hd in the aluminum macbook when I turn it on all I get is a white screen with a blinking folder I cannot get the mac to accept the disk...what am I doing wrong

So just how are you going to get OS X and your files onto the new disk?

Its the osx install disc that came with computer I had no files I needed to back up...

Did you hold down Option or 'D' after hearing the boot tone to boot off of the OS X DVD?

thats the thing it wont accept the disk like when you push it halfway in it wont pull it the rest of the way in

First, disk or disc?

Secondly if we're taking about a DVD disc, did you try pushing it in a little more?

Sorry yes the OSX install dvd just one and I push it all the way in with just enough so i can pull it out and still nothing
