Which version of OS X? Have you tried plugging it in, not installing any software, and running either Image Capture (which is either in your applications folder or in the utilities subfolder)?

Also try using the driver install for OS X off the canon website:

http://alpha02.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?SV=WWUCA900

Go on the canon site and get the OS X drivers.
Cos I'm a lovely guy I've found them for you:
1. Go here:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=351&modelid=6624
2. Click On:
"Drivers Software"
3. Wait for window to open
4. Click "Download Drivers"
5. Select the OSX Drivers
6. Agree and all that, download and install! 🙂

EDIT: It's cos the Scanner is older than OSX - that's all. The documentation/software included is years out of date.
