On the bar you should see the iPod music settings (volume, etc.) Check the rotation lock icon there before doing anything drastic like erasing or restoring from backup...

Even if the screen orientation lock is disabled, it stills only shows in portrait mode. Don't restore.. Just do a reboot of the device, and it works just fine again
