Hello guys! A college senior came over to me asking if I could see why his recently acquired iPhone 3G (used) was not getting any cell reception.

He told the iPhone was jailbroken and unlocked.

I checked the phone. I saw that the OS version was 3.1.3 but baseband was the dreadful 05.14.02. At first I wondered how an iPhone with an older iOS had a newer baseband. Then I realized -- the previous owner probably updated the iPhone to 4.x and downgraded the OS to 3.1.3. Sadly, the baseband got stuck at that notorious version.

I then checked the Internet. The baseband is still not unlockable, but it can be overwritten with iPad baseband which can be unlocked! However, after that, it is said that no official Apple firmware can be applied.

So I want to ask -- Should I upgrade it to the iPad baseband?

1. Are there any issues with using iPad BB on the iPhone 3G?
2. Should I instead wait for an official unlock for 05.14.02?

IF I want to upgrade it to iPad BB, the unlocking guides say that I need to first get the iOS version to 4.2.1 or so.

(for ex: http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/11/guide-to-update-baseband-06-15-00-with-redsn0w/)

Problem is, when I connect the iPhone to my Mac, this is what I get on iTunes. No other options. NOTHING.

I am from Nepal. I do not have an AT&T SIM card to go through that screen. :(

Okay here's what I am talking about:

http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/11/guide-to-update-baseband-06-15-00-with-redsn0w/

1. If you have not already done so, update your device with iTunes to firmware 4.2.1 just downloaded.

2. RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 Start from the first screen and select the file. ipsw firmware 4.2.1 on clicking the browse button, and after that the program has identified the firmware and start a quick process

Note for Windows User: Run the program in "Administrator Mode" by clicking the right mouse button on. exe.

3. From the next screen select "Install Cydia" and "Install iPad baseband" and then click again on Next.

You will be warned again with a notice which describes very clearly the drawbacks of updating your baseband.

I believe the iPhone of concern in this thread is in the same condition as mine.

4. When redsn0w ask you to enter in DFU mode, follow the onscreen instructions and your device will be properly jailbreak in seconds.

Now your iPhone is jailbroken, but still locked, to unlock the phone simply install Ultrasn0w 1.2 through Cydia. Follow our guide to Unlock iPhone 3G, 3GS Baseband 05.14.02 or 05.15.04 with Ultrasn0w.

How do I do that when I can't get iTunes to recognize the iPhone in the first place?

The user in this recent thread here has a similar problem with his iPhone: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1071525/

Put the phone into recovery or DFU mode, connect to iTunes and you should be able to restore to 4.2.1. Afterward, continue on wiu step #2.
