iPod touch HELP! IPT upgrade caused lost apps

I just this week got a 16g iPod Touch, plugged it in and sync'd my libraries.
All went well.
iTunes advised me that there was a newer version of device software 1.1.3, so I clicked the upgrade button.
All went well.
I had to re-sync, and all went well. Until I clicked on my device in iTunes and was taken directly to an upgrade page trying to sell my the January apps upgrade.

WTF?!?! 😕

Were'nt these apps supposed to be included?
Who can I contact?
Any advice from those who've dealt with Apple??

Where did you buy your iPod touch? You probably got an $20 discount on the device because the apps weren't included by then.
