i tried to do the iPhone method of installing 2.0 early and it didn't work of course... when i erased and restored my software it is giving me an error

"iTunes could not install the iPod touch Software Upgrade on the iPod "iPod touch" because an unknown error occured (-4)"

and when i turn on the iPod it looks normal except all the January Upgrade icons are just gone and unusable.

PLEASE HELP -- i need those features!!!

There's a lesson to be learned here.

I am having the same issue too and to the poster ^, no I haven't jailbroken, hacked or tried to install any 2.0. My ipod was clean and just getting it ready to sell and hit restore. I get the same error as the posters above. I wonder if it has something to do with 2.0 coming out tomorrow and is messing it up somehow.

what does this do? what does it help?

I think I'm just going to live with it the way it is for now and hopefully it'll be fixed when I install 2.0 tomorrow

There's a lesson to be learned here.

My iPod was not jailbroken and I didn't attempt to upgrade it to 2.0. I just tried a restore and it didn't work.

Anyways, I did some research. According to Apple, "On June 9, 2008, Apple announced the iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch which includes all features previously included in the January Software Upgrade, the App Store, and much more (also on June 9, the iPod touch January Software Upgrade was also removed from the store)."

I think that those of us who got the January Upgrade shouldn't have to pay full price for 2.0

I mean that's $30 on upgrades alone...

by the way -- why do we have to pay for the good software when iPhone users don't?!? B.S.!!

error (-4)

Ok, after I reformated my hard drive and put Windows XP on and reinstalled iTunes I deiced to restore my iPod Touch and reinstall the January Upgrade Software. I put the Upgrade package in the correct directory and tried to sync and encountered the same error. I thing since I restored my iPod im not getting those weird icons talked about before. My only guess is that Apple screwed up and when im trying to install the upgrade, itunes tried to authorize it self so I could install it and Apple "rejected" the authorization. Probably just a temporary error made by Apple on the night before!!!!! the new 2.0 firmware releases and the launch of the App Store. Im just gana have to wait and see what happens. :(

It's in prep for the new 2.0 firmware. The January Apps were taken down for 2.0. Give it some time, it'll either be back up or apple will make/give you 2.0.

Ive spent the last 8 hours on this little problem

I cleared out my I touch, ready for the non existant Software upgrade 2.0 and when I restored I had the same problem with the January Apps not installing. So after much searching and googleing, this is the reason for the error.

Itunes removed the Apps from Itunes last week. 2.0 will include the january apps, apparently. Anyway when you try to reinstall Itunes checks with the main server for the existence of the app and whether your eligable to install them. But they not there anymore so not going to install.

Thats only my opinion of course. You can always jailbreak and get them if you need to.

Cheers

 For you really good typists and grammar checkers, tough titties, I just dont care enough. SOrry. LOL :D
