I just had an accident with my new laptop. A whole glasss of wine! on the keyboard! I have left it upside down for a bit and given it a once over with the hair dryer. It looks like all is well but am I living on borrowed time?

Whatever you do, do NOT turn it on. If possible, open it up completly, and let it dry for a week or two.

Not sure about the effects of wine, but all you can really do is wait, and hope.

Hopefully it won't come to it but do you have accidental damage cover on your home insurance?

First quick thoughts...

I agree with Cassie...do not use it...take out the battery also.

Red or white wine might make a slight difference. Also, I'd imagine a more acidic or fruity wine would do more damage.

If I remember right the MBP have a keyboard tray that you can remove....also, how much wine...was it confined to just the keyboard?

Im just looking for advice. A friend told me that laptops are designed to take some abuse. Im on mine now... I am just worried.

Thats why I have a rule around my MBP: No liquid beverages within 6 feet of it.
I agree with not turning it off..and just hope for the best..

Wait, you are using it?!

Good lord, turn the thing off before you cause things to spark. Open her up and let her dry out. Try not to touch any chips or anything though.

It was a glass. Only on the keyboard. I have tested all keys and looks ok. I just can't understand why it still works. I decided that there was nothing I could do.. my mac was lost. So I put the battery back in and gave it a shot. It works as usual. But for how long? There must be others who have done the same!

There were, but they got electrocuted and died

You are seriously lucky that you didn't fry the mainboard. For future reference, never, ever turn on a piece of electronics that may still be wet. I would still leave it off and open in the sun for a good few days to let anything that's left in there dry up.

Alcohol is a type of sugar, which (if I am correct, psyc, not chem major here) can be really corrosive to metal.

Personally, I would stop using it and use these instructions to open it up and make sure you didn't unknowingly damage the insides...at the same time, you'll also want to clean the keyboard more thoroughly as you don't want any minerals or acids leftover from the wine to do further damage.

OK.. I tell you all what! I will keep using it as normal. In a few days I will post again. If I dont... im dead. If I do then we can all relax a bit and realise that the people at Apple realy do think of every thing. This must happen all the time. I guess that Apple know that too. I think that my mac would be dead by now... or me!

Thank you "TheAnswer"

Thats what I was loooking for! I will take your advice

Are you out of your mind?! LISTEN TO US AND TURN THE DAMN THING OFF.

Well if I do then we will never know! What ever happens I will let tell you all. I love my mac and usually dont go close if I have liquid in my hand. If this dies I will regret it.. if not then all the better (not that I will make a habbit of it!)

Didn't they tell you in school that electricity and liquid do not mix, all you need is for the power supply to get wet and its all over.

Not sure where the OP is located, but you gotta give props if the OP lives in the US. At the latest it's 3 in the afternoon on a Wednesday. Wish I could be drinking wine at that time...

Cheers!

All the kids drink wine right after school.

Since you are so adamant in ignoring the sound advice voiced in this thread I say why not spill a second glass over your MBP and see if your luck lasts... :D
