Hi, I just started a UNIX class and my teacher told me said he'd like it if I installed Red Hat Linux 8.0... so I did with Virtual PC 6.

Installation was sucessful (?) but when I log in and type startx, this is what I get:

What can I do?

try 'sudo kdm' or 'sudo gdm'

either should work. sometimes 'startx' has problems initializing due to the rainy season, or even if its a new moon. or something.

wow

wow thanks sparkleytone, ... it worked! yous the bomb diggity..

i had to login as root tho... scary

you're welcome

yeah after i posted i was afraid you might have to. X needs root access regardless of whether or not you were logged in as root anyways. at least you figured it out on your own ;)

have fun with your linux virtual machine. :)

p.s. if you want it to start up in X change your /etc/inittab to default to runlevel 5 ( id:5:initdefault: ) instead of 3

plz post questions in the appropriate forum. it keeps things more organized and you are more likely to get a response that way.
