Hello people,

I am seeking advice. My daughters phone was stolen at her school yesterday early. It’s a iphone 7 plus. She told me later in the afternoon. When I looked up the location of the phone on find my friends, it showed it being in the Galveston county jail which is about 25 miles from her school. When I logged in online to access the info, it showed it had 2% battery left.

I called the county jail and told them what happened. They told me to call it to see if they can hear it. I did that a few times but later my daughter told me it was on silent. After a few minutes, it went dead as the phone disappeared from findmyfriends. I gave them a description of the phone and also mentioned that it had a big ding on the bottom left corner. They said there are lots of property bags and there isn’t much they can do about it. What bothers me is that I know where it is!. I have not filed a police report yet as the police themselves have it. What I did do is suspend the service on it through the carrier. I just don’t know how to get it. What can I do?. Appreciate any advice.

That is the strangest story I've ever heard. Was the phone stolen from a locker or was it found after your daughter misplaced it? And how in the world did it end up at a county jail? Wouldn't the police have a report if an iPhone was taken away from someone? Or maybe a parent returned the phone to the police.
I know the battery is dead but I remember that when you log into find my phone isn't there an option to buzz the phone even if the phone is on silent? I just pinged my phone from my Apple Watch and it jingled with the silent switch on.

Had no idea about the ping thing. I sent a few messages to it and called it a bunch as that's what the officers at the jail told me to do but they said they didn't hear anything.

The phone was stolen when my daughter misplaced it at school. I find it just as wierd that it ended up at the county jail. I'm guessing that whoever stole it got in some kind of trouble and got arrested. If it wasn't turned it there byte police, I thought it would go to the police department instead of the county jail. It's driven me nuts that I know it's there.

Best thing to do is drive down there, explained what happened and showed them that the last location came from within the county jail. I seriously doubt that Galveston County jail is as big as Harris County jail so someone should be able to look who was recently processed and check what they have in their property bags. Heck maybe even take your daughter so they can be more sympathetic.

I would file a lost property/stolen iPhone report with the Police. Request a copy of the report and bring that down there to the last known location, which you stated is the jail. For further documentation, I would also print off where the iPhone was indicated on a map from find my iPhone and bring that with you to show where it was last reported. Then I would request to speak with a supervisor that hopefully can help arrange locating the phone from its last known location.

I agree. There may be a deputy who when things are slow may able be to look around for you. Every jail has its own policy when it comes to personal effects. Some put them in sealed bags and there are procedures to when and how they can open them. Definitely file a police report as that always gets the ball olling.

I filed a police report. Gave them the serial number and all the info. Let's see. Thanks for all the replies.
