Hey all, I was woken up with my iPhone vibrating from charging as it was plugged into my Mac, and I just saw a bunch of lines of text on my Mac's screen and by the time I got on it showed that my Mac had to restart.

I sent in a report and i've pasted it below. What do you think the reason for my first kernel panic is? How can I prevent it from happening again? I'm just concerned because I don't have anything backed up (i'm gonna back it up today).

    Thanks!

Please could you confirm the full model of your MacBook? Year, spec... :)

    Thank you in advance!

It's a 13" mid-2010 Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM and 250GB SSD and 250GB HDD, with 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo. Please let me know if you need anymore info!

Apologies for my belated reply, Reach :)

It's always difficult to pinpoint specifically what could have caused an issue with kernel panicking. As such I was hoping you'd be patient enough to run through some troubleshooting for me!

How often do you shut down your machine? Were you doing anything in particular or had a large uptime when the issue occurred? When you shut down the Mac, is reopen windows when logging back in unticked? Potentially a memory leak/paging to disk may have caused a problem, or a background process reopening may have compounded such an issue.

It's always worth checking the HDD/SSD SMART data as well – won't take more than a minute to verify. You can do this by downloading SMART Utility here: For 10.9 to 10.11

If you have a USB drive handy, it may be worth mounting MemTest x86 and booting into that by holding 'Alt' on startup – run a test overnight and see if it kicks up any issues. You can download the bootable ISO here: Image for creating bootable USB Drive

Best wishes and speak with you soon!

Thank you so much for helping me out! :) I appreciate it!

So i don't shut down my Mac often, I think it was running for 2 weeks without shutting it down. The only thing I can think about is that I had a lot of tabs open and had connected my iPhone to my Mac to charge overnight for the first time. Yes when i shut down the Mac, the reopen windows alert is ticked, I have to unstick it.

Thanks for the software! I'll try that out. So far my Mac seems fine, phew! I just wanted to pull this baby along until the 2016 MacBook Pro :p
