(Fixed the not-loading issue, so now it's just the bar)

MBP 13" 2017, 2.3 ghz, i5, 16gb ram - running on Mojave

I was told this didn't happen because of a drop or physical damage.

  • Tried resetting NVRAM, SMC
  • Took a screen shot - bar does not appear
  • Back light still works on the black area
I mean, this is most likely hardware. I'm taking it to Best Buy, but I just wanted to see if there was any knowledge I could take with me as well. Does this seem like a screen replacement situation?

Ok, I was just handed this MBP, so I don't know a lot of the basic facts (sorry!) All I know is it's a MBP from 2017 and has the 500+ gb HD.

The sequence of events went like this:

  1. Saw a completely black bar across right side of the screen (maybe 1/4th of the screen). This area of the screen is still illuminated, or whatever you call it (back light?)
  2. Googled problem. Multiple threads suggested resetting NVRAM. I do this.
  3. On restart, loading bar freezes at 100%
  4. Successfully go to Disk Utility, no issues to be found. There's a HD and a "base" 2gb ... thing?
  5. Restart again. This time loading bar goes to about 1/3rd before freezing
  6. It goes to 100 when resetting NVRAM again. Regular restart goes to 1/3rd again.
I don't know what to do next. Please help!

EDIT: I just restarted it in Verbose mode, and the line reads S10CPROT0DETACH_ING: utun0 error-6
I had a very similar "vertical colored bars appear on screen" problem. Tried all types of resetting, NVRAM, etc. But finally had to take it in. It was a 3yr old machine (almost 4) but the tech was able to find a way to order the part (which is the entire top part of the laptop - screen and the aluminum case behind it) and not charge me for it. I think he found a small "discoloration" on the screen which apparently there is an extended apple warranty for it. God Bless that tech, he saved me like $700 right there! This was not applecare, nor wa it at the Apple store - it was at CityMac, an authorized apple repair center.

Could this be related to "FlexGate" ?

I'd take it to a brick n mortar Apple Store genius bar (NOT to a "3rd party provider") and see what they say.

I don't think it's flexgate.... and I haven't found any pictures online that match what's happening. (Posting a pic in the original post.)

I have the same issue on my MBP 2019 13in. One day I just turned on the computer and I got a solid black strip on the left side. I called Apple care tried to reset NVRAM and SMC and nothing works. Whats strange is that I can turn on the laptop by pressing any key which I thought you could only do that by pressing the power/finger scanner button.

Were you able to get it fixed? Mine is still under warranty and I rather not have to make an appointment at the apple store

No, I never got it fixed. Although, I'm considering buying a used display off eBay. (Might just be worth it to save that 400 for the next computer, however...)

But! It's interesting that you mentioned that powering-on issue, because I just noticed mine seems to power on whenever I do anything--even open the lid. Strange.

I guess I have to take it in ugh. let us know what the issue is. I want to say its a ribbon cable that's loose, but who knows
