Hmmm.. is there any way to get the carrier to help pay for the phone if they don't sell it, like they subsidize phones when you sign up for a new contract?
No

ahhh... they do offer on that page a 1000 minutes + unlimited internet for $59, but right now i have the 600 minute + unlimited nights and weekends for $39, so adding $20 to that makes a better deal for me. i was worried i would only be able to go for the 1000 minute option. schweet.
That works too I suppose. The $20 Blackberry plan can be added to any voice plan though which is nice, I'm on a family share plan with my parents and have the BB plan for my line

If you want a simple yet unbreakable phone get a Vertu.
Why the hell would anyone want to do that? They're ugly, and cost $3,000

and you can use internet without a data plan!

Where do you see this? The problem I have is that usually you have to use verizon's data plan to access the web. Sometimes the phones actually come with Wifi, and then the carriers disable the feature when they sell the phone to make consumers use their data plan. That is what irks me.

It's called "Mobile Web" and its $5 per month. :)

Or do you consider that a data plan?

Yeah and general the only way around that is to get an unlocked phone and unlocked phones only really work the GSM network (Cingular and T-Mobile) and I do not know of any CMDA phones (Sprint and Verizon) that you can get unlock that the carrier will let you use

If you want a unlock phone with those feature you pretty much have to with either Cingular or T-Mobile and of the 2 I personally think Cingular is better. They have a larger coverage area and they use both I believe the 850mhz and the 1800mhz bands in the US compared to T-Mobile only using the 1800mhz band so most of the time they have a better single strength and most of the time T-Mobile is running of Cingular’s towers but then again that does depend on where you are. Where I am Cingular and sprint are my only 2 choice and Cingular has better coverage for my trips and nation wide. T-Mobile is pretty much crap and has single issues like crazy. And as an added bonus most of my friends and my girlfriend are on Cingular so most of my calls do not count against my minutes

Not all carriers disable features, just verizon

T-mobile is not "crap". I've had them for nearly 2 weeks and could not be happier. I've never not had a signal. With Cingular, I had signal issues all the time, they were worthless. T-Mobile does NOT run off of Cingular towers unless you are roaming, if you are in a T Mo service area, you will not use Cingular towers.

And please, don't give me the "Cingular is better nationwide crap." I drove with my sister from St. Louis to Washington DC, halfway across the country. At the time, I had Cingular, and she had T-Mobile. The only time when she did not have coverage was in the middle of nowhere West Virginia where we were miles away from civilization. When her phone couldn't pick up a T-Mo signal, she roamed on other carriers with no problem (usually smaller regional carriers, she was never on Cingular). I had spotty signal throughout the entire trip, even in larger towns, and worse, I had sh*t for coverage in Washington, DC. My phone never roamed on other carriers, so throughout the entire drive, I was without a signal quite often. We would be in desolate areas, and my phone would have zero bars, and hers would have 5.

Yes, cellular service does depend on where you are. but there's something that doesn't change based on location, and that's customer service. I dreaded calling Cingular's customer service. They were incompetent and did not know what they were talking about. My mom spent 2 hours on the line with someone to get our billing date changed. Before I signed up with T, I called them to inquire about EDGE coverage and the call took 2 minutes and I had an answer. Cingular's customer service is so terrible, that if only 2 providers in my area had coverage, Cingular and T, and Cingular was known for having better coverage, I'd still go with T.

The only reason I don't consider Cingular the worst cellular company in the US is because Verizon locks down their phones, whereas Cingular phones are usually uncrippled, and you have the option of an unlocked GSM phone.

just to counter that point, when my friends and I went cross state from philly, PA, to Cincinnati, OH, for a lot of the trip my cingular phone was the only one with almost full reception the whole time, where sprint and t-mobile were either at 1 bar of 0 bars. I wouldn't touch verizon with a 10' pole since they lock their phones down, although I agree they have good service.

and don't say it's the phone, my one friends' t-mobile phone and my phone are both moto V series.

Ok, I went into a Cingular store today and asked about buying a seperate phone, and the guy told me it would take a lot of work to call up cingular and get the codes to get it working right, and then he also told me it would disable the Wifi features, or at least make it go through the phone and I'd have to use a data plan anyways. So apprently there is no point in buying a nice phone if that is the case.

I know I'm asking this question again, but does anyone know anyone who has a wifi phone and can use it like a laptop to access the web at a hotspot and doesn't use a data plan?
