So is there any situation where one would actually advise to purchase the basic 16gb version? I am sure apple released 3 different storage options for a reason, and it seems the main advice on this forums is to simply max it out so you don't regret it later on.

While I agree that you cannot go wrong with this, the downside is that you might end up spending much more than you should. A hundred here and there really adds up. Just because someone might be able to spare that extra cash doesn't necessarily mean that he should, as said money could just as readily be put to other uses like accessories.

Consider the audience/community.

Apple realizes that many of its customers are NOT uber-alpha geeks stressing the devices to their maximum capabilities. Regular folk reading books, surfing/shopping the web, looking up recipes, playing simple games, etc. Even with the slight additional app sizes for the high resolution graphics, most of their apps will still be quite small and fit well within a 16GB device.

These are NOT the people you typically find hanging out on MacRumors.

My advice is and will remain: buy the capacity/capability you need while allowing a little headroom. If you're already close to filling a 32, then perhaps a 64 would be a good choice. If you're just barely using more than 16GB, you'll likely still be fine in a 32.

I paid over $800 for my 3G/64gb Verizon last year. I have yet to even activate it. With the plethora of free wi-fi almost everywhere I go, I haven't needed it.

I think this time I'm going for the 64gb wi-fi version.

Why 64gb? I have two small children and my(their) ipad is filled with movies. That's really the only reason I can think of for 64gb and it DOES fill up fast!!

For those who think to wait until the initial rush is over, expect to wait at least 3-4 weeks in some areas and in some cases, a few months. You are deluding yourself if you think waiting a week qualifies as "after the initial rush."

I remember the lines for the iPhone4, iPhone4s, iPad1 and the iPad2. People have already started to camp out at Best Buys. So if you haven't pre-ordered already (too late, initial orders all sold out), then expect to get up early and wait in lines.
