My husband got a great Calvin Klein suit at Men's Warehouse of all places-- fantastic price and they did the alterations for free and it was ready for pick up the following morning.

Get a black wool suit, three-button european style (fairly good quality, you can pick one up for less than $250 if you shop the sales). Try S&K.

Then, black leather dress belt - with the black metal buckle.

Black leather shoes - but not wingtips. And always remember to keep the backs of them polished as well as fronts.

Shirt: Black and muted gray stripe; Claiborne's got a couple. Either that or go with the regular, Sateen White, very classic.

You don't need a tie, but if you want one go on eBay and order a Lorenzo Cana. They're bright, unusual, hand-made and ship from Germany. I love'em.

Get a classic hair cut and a nice watch.

Done.

Maybe it's just me but that sounds like a uniform for a hitman.

Well - we don't know exactly what the new job is - so that might be spot on...

I recently discovered it helps to buy dress shirts that fit well around the stomach and chest. Sounds simple but I spent years grabbing shirts that had the right neck size or sleeve length, but they were often too wide. Wearing shirts that are the "right size" for your middle helps- not too tight, but not baggy. Looks sharp. IMO.

All the other advice on here is solid too in my opinion. dark suits- no novelty ties unless your a clown, or middle school guidance counselor. etc. etc.

Also- the whole "Dress For Success" bs often rings true, dress like the folks one step ahead of you - but don't over due it or you look like a twunt to your coworkers. This balance has served me well at work.

Congrats on the new position! It's always exciting to start something new, and we spend so much time at work, challenging exciting work should be a must have item. G'luck and enjoy it! :)

I'll throw in for Men's Wearhouse. Good prices for decent quality, and the folks there know a thing or two. You'll walk out without feeling wallet-raped, and you won't look like a Penney's sale monkey.

Save the serious money for when you want to make a serious commitment.

I got my interview suit (of course I got the job and will never wear a suit to work) at Men's Warehouse and was very happy with both the suit and the service. A nice perk of Men's Warehouse is they'll press a suit you buy from them for free at any of their locations.

I'd definitely go either gray or navy for a first suit (not black).

I have occasionally worn my suit without a tie but I would get a matching shirt and tie anyway so the option to have the tie is there.

gee thanks... no my point is to be classic. Change the hit man look by using the white shirt. That work? hmm...

maybe this explains why I don't get the pretty women :D

Yeah, bit too black.

Go for a dark suit with a resonably bright shirt and tie (not over the top, blue is a good option) and you should do fine.

Whatever you do don't go for a black suit with a white shirt, it'll just make you look like funeral director and just say no to black ties.

Thank you guys.

I'm really appreciative of your help here.

I live in Southern Oregon, so I'll have to travel a bit to get to any sort of large city. We do have a Macy's so I'll check that out.

I work in a very small company. I am the IT dept., one third of the design team, the carpenter... so I'm allowed to wear what I want. It's mellow, super mellow. I can come in in sweat pants if I really want.

I have a 32-34 inch waist, but it is leaning toward 34+ lately ;). My frame is a classic athletic frame, so most clothes fit me.

I like the hitman look! I like having fun, and am not stuffy. I will not be in a dusty server room.

I'd like to have this suit make women swoon, and money flower from trees too. Thanks again guys!! :D

I too would recommend Men's Wearhouse, especially if you come down to San Francisco to shop. If you've got a higher budget and want something more designer, Nordstrom is also a good choice. Macy's is also decent, but I think the customer service is much better at the first two places.

Both places will do tailoring for free, which is very very important: good fit will set you over the top style-wise. Also make sure they accurately measure your collar and sleeve length for dress shirts.

If you really want the hitman look, do a pinstriped black double-breasted suit with wide lapels! On second though, skip it. A classic two-button single-breasted blazer will best stand the test of time; three-button blazers kind of come in and out of style, though they can look pretty sharp (I'm a tall guy, so my black suit is a three-button, but not cut too too high).

There's nothing wrong with wingtips IMO. Don't be afraid of brown for your shoes and belt. They make a nice change of pace from black.

I would suggest checking out a store called Jos A. Banks. You can get fitted for appropriate menswear and then they keep your measurements on file so you can look up later or use their online portal:

They sell a suit called the Trio (it comes in many different options) and the basic idea is it comes with two pairs of pants, giving you more options when you travel (two days to wear). I own this combo in a dark brown color and a black color. both sets have an off color pair of pants, gray check for the black suit and brown plaid for the brown suit. I really like this for going to two day job interviews or conferences.

This company has really nice stuff and it is pretty reasonable in price, they are always running sales. They will also tailor to fit properly. I have been very lucky with this brand and they are found throughout the U.S.
