Is there away of getting passed this log in problem?????
I don't have any disc's so cant do a reinstall of op's and all I have done is carried out updates.
Can any body help me please.

Hi tampersteve,

I was just doing normal update and every thing looked ok.
no problems doing update's and all seemed great , so I turned the mac off after doing updates as it told me to restart to complete update's.

After doing this the apple logo comes on screen and then it asks me for a user name and password??? I have never used a password or user name on my mac.

Ok I have only had this mac for about three weeks as I bought it off gumtree.

Is there away I can rest any passwords on the system?? please remember I can not get into any other screen than the log in screen.

Thanks for your time and help

Try this, and let us know the results.
----------------------------------
Hold "cmd s" while you boot
Release when you see text on the screen
After text stops, type the following commands one at a time and press return button once after each line.

/sbin/mount -uaw
rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
reboot

Follow screen instructions to create a new admin account.
Change password in original account.

Also here is some more info on changing your password.

Hi guys,

First of all thank you all for the help so far.:)

I have tried the cmd/ s one and followed it to the letter. and the dam thing is still asking me for user name and password .

I have called the guy I bought it from and he has no idea of what the user or password was.

how can I get it to boot from the cd so if all else fails I can try reinstall osx.

Any ideas please ???

The big hammer is getting closer. Ha Ha

You would normally boot with the CD in while pressing the "C" key, but now I'm confused because you initially mentioned that you had no discs.

Hi there,

Yes that is correct I don't have any disk's yet but I am in the process of buying one off eBay.

And the guy only lives about 25 minutes from me, so I think that might be the best route.
Do a complete clean install??

What do you think about that idea???

A clean install would be the best idea. :)

If you have the seller's name - try his/her name, with no password.

So if you bought it from "John Doe", try a user name of "John Doe" (and if that fails, "johndoe",) and just hit enter when it asks for the password.

Lots of OS X users just left the password blank, and freak out when asked for a password - when just hitting "Enter" or clicking "OK" work.

Hi guys,

First of all thanks to all who gave me guidance with my G4 problem.

I went to Smithfield this afternoon and bought os x tiger 10.4 disc. from a nice bloke called john.

He also gave me a complete G3 for free, nice clean condition.
CD drive , 80 gb hard drive, 1gb memory and a original apple monitor complete with stand.
Now that was a very nice gift if I say so my self, plug it all in and pressed the on button and away she went. working good.

Right here we go clean install on my G4.

I will let you know how I get on tomorrow .
Thanks again for all the help.

Absolutely not! Mac OS X Snow Leopard only supports Intel Macs. Leopard was the last version to support PowerPC Macs like the G4.
