    ... I think its dying.

    Problem:
    1) When I start Photoshop or Quark they either crash or i get an 'cannt save because of a disk error" message.

    2) Its a 250Gb hard drive of which all is used except 2.4gb, where is all the disk space gone? Files only account for approx 50Gb.

Ive triid disk utility but the "repair disk" button is greyed out.

    Any suggestions?

I would say download Onyx and run it to see if it can clean out unnecessary files.
