So my friend has accidentally sent me a message containing a virus which I have opened and it has been catastrophic. I was first met with the ? Folder but have since entered restore mode. I have an external hard drive and tried to download the OS to it but it failed in the last minute twice. Since then I tried to erase the hard drive but that option was unavailable so I selected erase free space. I now have a loading bar with 'erasing free space' next to it, am I doing the right things and what should my next steps be? Thank you for any help you can give.

Which model Mac do you have? Have you tried Internet recovery?

Hi, it's a mid-2013 retina macbook. Internet recovery was started automatically but was not successful. Macintosh HD has disappeared from the disk utilities. I have attached an external hard drive but it has failed to download OSX to it multiple times

A virus? Are you sure? Interested to know what happened?
I was sent a malicious link on facebook, I clicked automatically without even reading it. I'm not 100% sure that it was a virus but within 10 minutes my screen froze before turning off. When it turned back on I was presented with the flashing ? folder. I have since been able to get back onto my laptop for around 5 minutes before it did the same. I am unable to repair Macintosh HD as it is not available in reboot mode.

I have also been unable to reinstall OSX

Take it to Apple, they will reinstall the OS.
[doublepost=1518186332][/doublepost]Can you post a photo of the whole disk utility screen? You don't need to erase free space, btw, just erase the drive Bruna in the pic and make sure it's Mac OS Extended Journalled. Then reinstall Mac OS. Hope you have a backup.

Do you login as an Admin account?

I know it's kind of academic given the situation you're in, but I'd be surprised if clicking a link could mess things up to this degree. Especially if you're not logged in as a user with Admin rights.

I'm just intrigued and trying to understand what happened! ;-)
