Try some of the solutions at this site. In particular, I've found that deleting the following files/folders will usually fix these types of problems:

Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui/

help not helping (mai working)

thanks for your help all better now, cheers.

on a different note recently updated the security from the apple downloads as recommended ny apple and since then mail keeps asking for my keychain password all the time and mail keeps hanging as it tries to retrieve mail so long in fact that the server rejects the request. any ideas. have seen lots of posts on apple website about this.
