Help on buying a iphone please

IF i buy a iphone from apple.com do i just get the phone then sign up for the contact after?
as im in the uk and do not need the contract but can send the phone a mate in the usa who will send it to me

2. Get naked and do ritual Apple product unboxing.
3. Pictures, of course.
4. Connect to your Mac or PC running the latest version of iTunes.
5. Follow on screen prompts to activate phone and select ATT plan.
6. There is no step 6. 😀

The phone needs to be activated to work, and that needs to happen through the US version of iTunes and setup of an AT&T account.

The news has been abuzz lately that unlock procedures have been discovered, so that may change things, however. Also, keep in mind that apparently a UK/EU launch of the iPhone is imminent anyway.
