help on formatting external drive

I searched and found some useful info, but I just want to double check. I've got a Seagate drive that I need to format. I'm going to partition it, can I just go to partition first since it defaults to Mac OS Extended Journaled or should I erase it first?

When Disk Utility partitions the drive, it also formats each newly created partition, so there's nothing else to do. You'll be good to go.
