When my iMac started up I didn't hear the apple bong. I had speakers plugged into the mini jack port but not turned on. I checked my sound settings and have my "Play sound effects though" option in the sound effects pane set to "Selected sound output device" which is Built-in.

I believe this to be a bug as I can not find any other settings to change the sound output and I would always get the apple bong before with my speakers plugged in but off.

Im running OSX 10.8.2 on a 2012 iMac.

Update: Ive tried restarting and got the same result. All my sound effect audio is coming out my connected speakers. I have double and triple check that the "Play sound effects though" option is set to "Selected sound output device" but even though is says its set to "Selected sound output device" its actually set to "Headphones"

Any help or suggestion would be very helpful.
