I am looking to get a 65inch LCD TV. Mostly tv watching and some movies. Semi-bright room.

1. Samsung UN65NU8000FXZA
2. Sony XBR65X850F

I purchase 900f. Superb TV.

Though i think samsung does a better job with firmware pushes and compatibility than Sony.

I have a few quirks with surround sound etc. and had to adjust many settings for ideal image on the Sony, friends Samsung QLED was more plug and play. But colors were a bit much overdone we both feel.

Im only on week 2.

X900F.

Or X930e if you can still find one. Be warned, this one is built like a tank and is very heavy. But you get incredible brightness with it.

How about the LG 4K? I've got one about 2 years ago and the picture is great.

i'm getting an 49xf900 for my mancave , bno or sony make the best tvs imo

had a samsung tv , it packed up after 2 days , it had exc pq but was very badly made

It developed an odd red mark down the screen , I took it back to richers sounds and they said it was a faulty motherboard.

From what I’ve read Samsung make the screens for everyone but the stuff behind the screens is down to each manufacturer.

I got my Sony xf900 today , wow , what a picture

Sony makes good panels. 2-3 years ago Bravia TVs had a litany of software issues. I nearly bought one but a 500 page long thread about the matter on their website put me off. Let us know how you get on with the software and whether it's stable.

i'm avoiding the android os totally and have a ps4pro and an apple atv4k attached via yamaha av amp , haven't connected the tv to my wifi

seems to be ok so far

I have the LG OLED and love it.

I have the LG OLED also, but these LCD models that the OP is considering aren't really in the same price range.

The both the NU8000 and the 850F are edge-lit TVs. I would avoid those like the plague. I would go with the Sony 900F.

For what it's worth, The Wirecutter has a good guide (that was just updated) here: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-lcd-led-tv/

We have just got the LG B7 OLED 55" for £1199.

One word - OUTSTANDING! It's a tough Apple TV 4K and LG OLED are made for each other. The Dolby Vision is out of this world. Even the speakers are decent in it although according to my buddy, we are getting the LG Dolby Atmos sounder in the autumn :)
Even though it's large, I quite like the design of the B7. My surfing films do look outstanding on it :)

There are some great deals on the B7 right now!

I bought a 4k blu ray player ( sony x700 ) to go with it and compared it to my Apple 4k , tbh the difference is so small Blu Ray seems pointless.

In fact dare I say the ATV had a better pq to my eyes... plus SO much more convenient , none of that swapping discs stuff etc...

Cheaper too - the blu rays cost c £20 on average , the 4k versions of my 500 movies - ZERO

Apple win again !!!

My Panasonic Ultra HD Blu-ray player already collecting dusk for more than 2 months since I buy Apple TV 4K.

Agree with you the movies at movies iTunes video quality is very closed to Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. I find no reason buy any Ultra HD Blu-ray disc anymore.

I got 88 4K titles in my movies iTunes now and keep growing but only 4 titles in Ultra HD Blu-ray disc and it is not going to growing much anymore. Haha!

Don't buy, rent. I suggest you sign up to Cinema Paradiso where you can rent 4K Bluray movies. 4 discs a month at £7 or 6 discs for £10 is a lot cheaper than renting through iTunes.

Discs have never inconvenienced me as 90% of the times I know what I want to watch at home before it's available and simply add it to the queue so that it's delivered to me as soon as the movie studio has made it available for rentals.

A bonus is lossless sound which is totally worth the inconvenience of taking a knee to put a disc in. However you are welcome to gift me the X700 if you consider it a waste of space. :p

Nice. When I subscribed to Love Film I went through rented nearly 200 movies in 4 years. Buying them would have cost £1,800-2,400 so it was very cost effective for me to subscribe and encouraged me to rent movies that I would otherwise not rent or buy individually.

I not sure how much I spend already but a long in control and enjoying, it was fine. :)

Re OP question. Might I suggest AVSForum (assuming you are in the states). AVForum for the UK. More people there will have had experience with the sets and possibly reviews.

Also, there is one overriding need and that is the person watching needs to see the set in action if at all possible. If you can, go look at them. I appreciate not everyone can do this.

I would also check SoundAndVision's website as they generally do extensive lab testing before they rate them. Even if your specific model has not been tested, often the results for a slightly different model (55" vs 65" say) will apply to other models in the same line.

Here are their recommended models. The lower price category is dominated by Visio.

On top of that above, if you can (again appreciate that not everyone can), get to try the operating system and remotes, that would be a good move. They can be very annoying. If you get a chance to see them then upscaling should be a big consideration.

RTINGS also have reviews. Not sure these are correct but....

Slightly OT, it is subjective, should the OP be looking for a disc player as well.
When you get your eye in to see what the artefacts are and other compression issues then it can be quite clear. A disk for some is still the default quality provider. I use Apple TV for many titles but the ones I want to see in all their glory are on disk. Even the <4k masters. ATV does 4k well, most certainly.
:)
