I'm a newbie to photography and I was looking for a good SLR. Are these 2 a good combo?

Canon 30D

Canon EF-S 17-85mm lens

The 30D is two models old now, but it still an excellent 'prosumer' body. If you find one in good condition at a great price then it would be worth acquiring. But I would first ask myself what am I looking for in a camera, and would something like Canon's entry-level 1000D (Rebel XS) satisfy my needs?

The lens covers a good focal range and would be fine.

EDIT: I just looked at the ebay auction for the camera body, so far it's a bargain. Just see how high it goes.

Um, I'm not sure if you'd be able to find a shop with a 30D on the shelves anymore!
