The 30D is two models old now, but it still an excellent 'prosumer' body. If you find one in good condition at a great price then it would be worth acquiring. But I would first ask myself what am I looking for in a camera, and would something like Canon's entry-level 1000D (Rebel XS) satisfy my needs?

The lens covers a good focal range and would be fine.

EDIT: I just looked at the ebay auction for the camera body, so far it's a bargain. Just see how high it goes.

Go in and check them out for yourself by holding them and seeing how they feel. You could be very surprised when you do so.

Um, I'm not sure if you'd be able to find a shop with a 30D on the shelves anymore!

The Ivory Tower (I'm not coming down)
That lens is somewhat lacking, but if you're just starting out it shouldn't be too bad. The price isn't bad on either piece, either.
