I know this is my first post i just registered because i have a giant problem my doc disappeared on my old iMac i got it in Christmas of 09-10. I ran into a problem with it my dock is totally gone and i know its not hidden because when i spotlight it and try and switch it from bottom to right it doesn't respond, my computer doesnt let m login, logout or shut down properly i have to use the power button. and because of the dock disappearing i cant download anything.

Why can't you download anything, when the Dock is not there?
Take a look at Applications / Utilities / Activity Monitor like shown below, just sort by name and see, if the "Dock" process is running.

Have a look at Activity Monitor (Applications / Utilities /) and select All Processes and sort by CPU to see what the culprit may be.
Also check the "System Memory" tab to see what your "Page ins:", "Page outs:" and "Swap used:" are.

image below uses sorting by CPU as an example

It would be also good to know, what Mac OS X version and Mac you have:

Does it also happen in another, even temporarily created, user account?
