I tried to upgrade to Mojave this morning, but it keeps saying that the upgrade has failed. I have looked for help online and have used Command-R on start up. I am trying to reinstall High Sierra but when I click on the Macintosh HD it states that the disk is locked. I don't know how to unlock it and would be grateful for some advice please. Thank you so much.

Open Disk Utility, right-click the disk on the left-hand side, select Unlock, enter your computer password. :)

It's just locked because of encryption. Let me know if you're still having any issues.

Many thanks for your reply, but nothing happens when I right click on the disk, in Disk Utility. Are there any other suggestions please?

Use internet help, using before the chsrging bars shows Alt+cdm+r

Boot to recovery again. Next, assuming you are on an SSD machine you want to open terminal and type 'diskutil apfs list' and hit enter. You will be presented with the list of volumes, so find your Macintosh HD and copy the GUID associated with it. That will be something like 21BC2-A2F23-..... then type 'diskutil apfs unlockvolume xxxx' and paste the GUID where the xxxx is. It will present a password field so type your password and hit enter. You wont see and dots when you enter your password but it is going in. If the volume is successfully unlocked then quit terminal and proceed with a reinstall.
