Help!!! Problems with SB-600

I have to take several family photos tomorrow and i tested my Nikon SB-600 flash unit and it turned on ok, but after that it just keeps turning off and on continuously. I tried replaceing the batteries and taking it off and on the camera, but no luck

any ideas?

Be sure it's fit properly on the shoe.

DO NOT attach the speed lite while power is on.

I did not attach the speedlight when the power was on
and it's properly on the shoe

I really have no idea...strange behavior. Hopefully someone will be along who can help.

If you bought it new, I would give Nikon a call.
