So, I dropped my laptop a few hours ago.. UGH! (Black Macbook, 2 GHZ, 2 GB RAM, 160 Gig HD)

Basically, the famous question mark with folder pops up over gray screen. I'm away on vacation for another week (in Europe) and therefore don't have any type of install disc here. I just want to secure my files first and therefore have booted it in target mode (I have an iMac 24 inch here). I do not have the sufficient cables though, only an ethernet cable. Is it possible to transfer the files in target mode from a (seemingly) broken machine (I turned file sharing off on it if that matters) to a working 24" iMac. I suppose I could get the cables (firewire etc etc).. but I don't want my dad to find out though :( so I am doing everything I can do first secure the files.

Please help me. What can I do? What are my options? As said, I have broken Macbook, working 24 inch iMac available, with an ethernet cable. I just want to SECURE the files first right now!

Thanks a lot for your help.

Also, once the files are safe, once I return to the states I just boot it up with Apple + C and go from there, re-installing the OS?

Thanks a lot guys.

Unfortunately I don't think you can "Target disk mode" over Ethernet, what is available is Migration Assistant over Ethernet now though.

That won't work for you though it seems. Best bet is either to pick up a FW400 cable or an external USB enclosure somewhere where you are.
