If you mean the Sidebar in Finder and the entries under Favorites, hold down the COMMAND/CMD key (left of Spacebar) and drag the item off.

on my tool bar i have a heading called popular when i click it a list of my favotite sites come up i want to remove some of the sites in there how? i dont mean sidebar in finder

Safari > Menu Bar > Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Collections (on the left) > Bookmarks Bar > Popular (folder on the right) > expand that folder > select bookmark you want to delete> Backspace / right-click > delete.
