If I use time machine this way and my computer crashes, should I simply be able to plug the external straight into a new mac and restore from the backup or will it be messed up because I did it through time machine?

Still can't see the hard drive on Airport Extreme in Time Capsule

1. Go into Finder and click drop-down for the shared tab on the left hand side
2. There you should see the name of your AirPort Extreme, double click on it and if it prompts you to enter a password, enter it in.
3. Then you should see the name of the partition/partitions you have created, double click on the one you want to use and you should be connected.
4. To verify that you are connected either go to the your computer under the Devices tab or just run Time Machine and make sure you can use that drive
:apple: Hope this helps!

This is going to sound like a dumb question but how do I do the instruction above? How do I click the drop down in Finder?? I'm still stuck. I can see my external hard drive partitions in the Airport Utility under Disks. When I go to select back up disk in Time Machine I see one called Local and once called Home on local host but I can't select either of them. What am I missing?

First you need to allow your AirPort Extreme to file share over WiFi.
1. Go into the AirPort Utility
2. Click on the Manual Setup in the lower left hand area
3. Click on the Disks icon up at the top
4. Then the file sharing tab
5. Then make sure the Enable File Sharing option is checked.
Next you need to have your computer recognize the drive/drives

When I did on the number 2, the prompt didn't show up and the time machine always off (won't on).

Anyone?

weird issue with partitions

Guys, I have an issue where if I format my external drive into two partitions - one with HFS+ and other with ExFAT, plugging it into the AirPort Extreme makes the Airport Extreme report that the connected disk needs to be repaired. When I plug-in the drive, the Disk Utility reports that there is nothing to be repaired. As soon as I erase the disk and create one single HFS+ partition, it seems to work just fine. Any clues?
