Hello,

My name is Chris, I recently spilt a drink on the top of my MacBook Pro Retina's keyboard this past weekend. I turned it off immediately and have not turned it back on since then.

Just looking for some advice or help on what to do.

I was wondering what the best course of acton is, if a service offers a cleaning where they will take the keyboard off or clean under it somehow to make sure there is no liquid inside the laptop before I turn it back on. (was a sugary drink)

I am almost positive the notebook is not damaged yet, so that is why I want to make sure none of the liquid got inside of the case. I contacted the apple store but they sent me to the genius bar and I would rather go to a specialist that is approved by Apple.

Regards,
Chris Groody

Yo Chris,
I'm not sure who would willingly clean your notebook, but depending upon what was spilled, the issues can be big. What did you spill?

FYI, having someone at the Genius Bar look at it is the best possible person you can choose because they actually work for Apple. They're definitely authorized but they will charge you an arm and a leg for parts. Last I heard, a logic board was still upwards of $1,000.

I would stick it in some rice for a couple of days to ensure all moisture is gone. Then, since your warranty is voided, you can attempt to open it and clean it out. If you spilled water, I would not even bother opening it. Things with sugar and anything acidic, I would clean it.

If you paid for it recently via a credit card, see if the credit card offers a warranty that covers accidental damage. If you have homeowner's insurance or renter's insurance, you can see if it is covered under that and if the deductible isn't too high, it may be worth filing a claim.

Finally, I would buy a sippy cup. Orange in color because I like orange.

Are you technical at all?

You could clean it yourself if you get the right screwdrivers.

Take patience doing the strip down and be methodical.

There are plenty of tutorials online to help you.

It was a red bull, it was my buddy but I was there I turned it off right away and it shut down fine. I haven't turned it on since its been sitting upside down with a napkin for 3 days now.

I am technically apt and can clean it myself. but I did not want to void the warranty, that is why I thought of bringing it to apple.

IF the liquid did not do any damage and I pay for the cleaning I am hoping my warranty will stilll be active.

EDIT : I am not even sure if any liquid got underneath. I turned it upside down instantly and tried drying it up (this is all precaution)

Normally liquid damage instantly voids the warranty as it can cause problems down the line.

Best chance of survival comes from the liquid being clean water, worst will be soft drink full of other components (such as coke or RB), they can be left behind as a residue after the water component has evaporated and cause corrosion.

Your buddy owes you an MBP...
