Ok do this,

get a large bag, open your laptop and set it in the bag, buy epson salt or rock salt and fill a cup with it, set the cup on your keyboard, wrap the bag so that no air can get in or out.

Doing this will dry out the screen much faster than if you just let it sit, the salt will adsorb the water faster.

This is why they put those salt packets in shoes, new computer boxes, ect.

let us know how it turns out

Actually it's silica that they put in with shoes etc, but some of that salt that is used to melt ice and snow would do the trick. It's a supersaturated compound and will absorb water at any chance it gets. Make sure not to let it get on your computer.

Just don't worry, as long as you have enough patience your macbook will come out unscathed.

You could also buy dry uncooked rice.
Place your computer in a bag with the rice and rotate turning it upside down and rightside up over hour.
Make sure tehe laptop is submerged in rice with the screen extended and open, rice is cheap and wont harm the computer. Be careful turning it over.

Take the computer out after doing this for 8 hours. Do not hook the power or a battery up yet.
Clean all rice from the machine, not much should stick.

Use a flashlight and place the light about 2 inches from the screen at a 30* angle. At this point you should be able to see significantly reduced water. Repeat until it is gone.

You will have some circle stain outlines on the screen and it will be in no way perfect, but it will be much better and you can rest easy about the water getting into the electronics and frying your machine.

PS to the OP: NEVER drink from open containers of ANYTHING around a computer, period, lol this is why.

Just a little update for everyone...

i am extremely happy to say that the entire area affected by the water is fine, and there is now only a small dot in the middle bottom of the screen(which is essentially covered up by the dock lol). I thought my macbook would be ruined forever, wow i was lucky. haha i have a new rule now, no liquids within 5 feet of my macbook! :p

i just want to say thank you to everyone for all the help and suggestions, i really appreciate it! :D

Please tell me what you did, I just got in the same situation :(

basically i left it open and tilted it upside down onto a pillow and then i put a towel between the pillow and screen. i dont know how but it worked, i guess it just let all the water dry out. i left it like that for about 4 days and it luckily went away. you just want to dry out all the liquid you spilled, so your harddrive, etc. is not messed up because apple will do nothing if anything happens from water damage. make sure to take the battery out too.

im sorry that had to happen to you, i know what it feels like and it really sucks. but it makes you learn not to keep liquids near your valuables. ;)

good luck and let us know how everything turns out!

I spilled water on my macbook screen last night and so for the night i tilted it upside down with a towel under it, hoping the water damage would disappear. Unfortunately there is now only more water damage then there was before.

Any suggestion on what to do, I am freaking out here because my parents bought this computer for me only a few months ago and I need it for the next 4 years for college.

THANKS!

OK, don't panic..
Changes are you won't need a new screen because it's still working and it appears the water has gotten into the lighting/reflective backing under the TFT, in the TFT module itself.

First of all what you can try is placing the unit on it's side, like you'd do with a Christmas card in somewhere warm but not HOT! Remove the battery cause it doesn't like heat! Ideally I'd suggest and airing cupboard.. check it every couple of days..

Assuming it's just water, once it's evaporated there shouldn't be any residue.. unless it's impure liquids like tea or coffee.

^^^Uhh, look 3 posts up^^^

Glad to hear everything worked out letswastetime, I was confident all along having gone through that in the past, but it makes you sick not knowing doesn't it?

Well, if anyone wants to know, here was my situation:

I, as some people might know, steal my neghbors internet, I'm not proud, but it is what it is  I lost connection in my house, so I went outside to see what's up and a drop of rain from my gutter hit my screen (it was a fairly big drop (more like a leak) for a second. I brought it inside and wiped it clean but saw the aforementioned water-screen problem and I freaked. So I turned it off and then on (remember, only my screen was wet, so it shouldn't really matter) and it was still there. I then put my laptop in a cupboard upside down and open (think roof-style) and put a small cup of epson salt under the water, closed the cupboard and went to sleep. I went to school and when I came home, the water level had dramatically decreased, and even now it is fine. I'm typing on my MacBook now and there is only 3 dots on my screen which I'm sure will disappear soon. I just want people to know that there is hope :)

PS: Remember to take the bezel off! I think that helped speed the process up!

PPS: I also took my battery out

Don't panic!

This happened to me yesterday while (ironically) cleaning my brand new (ish :p) macbook pro. I spilt water onto the bottom right of the screen, leaving a lovely corner of annoyance. I was absolutely terrified that I'd ruined it, swearing and tearing my hair out. I googled "spilt water on macbook pro screen" which brought me here. I calmed down a bit, read the advice and took the battery out quickly! then I put the radiator on max in my bedroom and half closed the laptop, with a towel wedged between the keyboard and the screen, hoping the water would drain downwards and get absorbed by the towel. Today, I started up my mbp unhappily, sure that there would be no difference. However, it is now literally perfect. I can't see any dodgy marks on the screen anywhere! I love my macbook. *cuddles it* :apple: :D

take care when removing the screen

if you want my advice, its best let the water evaporate on its own. if it was just a small spill, removing the screen is probably not worth the risk. i thought cleaning my month-old macbook with windex would be a good idea to get rid of those stubborn fingerprints, boy was i wrong. I made my situation even worse by incorrectly removing and subsequently damaging the small plastic clips which are attached to the bezel. if it was a small spill, just let it dry as suggested by a few other people. for me, it took just four days for it to dry completely. Those small clips break really easily...good luck to anyone who has the same issue.

Same thing happened to me, tried everything but it will not fix the issue.

I brought it to 2 different Apple stores, the 2th one the guy was cool enough to fix it for free under warranty, the first one the guy was by the book. Best thing to do is just keep trying till they fix it, no cost!

Wow, nice to see it worked out. You can probably get a new screen (if it's REALLY bothering you) from apple because they probably wouldn't see that as water damage...(although that would be pretty dishonest! but right back at them for not caring at all about your computer and not compromising on anything...)

what SUPERSTEVE9219 wrote worked for me and thank you very much for your post.
Red wine fell on my Macbook's screen(not a big surface). where the wine fell, the screen became brighter.i removed the battery. i closed the macbook opened on a suitcase(no air) and i put a towel on the keyboard. then i put on the towel close to the damage one humidity collector(there are in supermarkets often used for wardrobes with humidity or general for the house). i went to sleep and the other morning the wine was gone!! only one light line has left which i can only recognize it from a particular corner because i know that it has been there before.

i hope this one helps more..

Leave it off with a fan pointed at it for a day or so... If no luck it will need to be taken apart to dry. U think the LCD is fine. I have replaced a few mb lcd I usually charge $300, 150 labor and 150 parts,.... But i am cheap. LOL. Be prepared like said before to pat 500 to 600 usd

same problem different situation

Hey everyone,

I am having a similar problem to the original thread maker. I sprayed windex onto my 13.3" macbook lcd to clean it. While doing so, some of the windex seeped into the lcd panel from the bottom of the lcd screen. I have a problem similar to the images originally posted. My bottom half of the screen is brighter from the water marks. There was a band of water markings about 6cm in width across the bottom of the lcd screen.

I have placed my laptop with the lid open in front of a fan for 3 days now. The water marks have substantially subsided but there is still one horizontal streak of water markings about 1cm in width at the bottom of the panel.

Any suggestions of what to do next?

Thanks a lot.

Thank You

I had to post!!

On Friday I split water on my mothers brand new lap top. I was walking past it and tripped. I sacrificed my body to block most of it, but a small splash happened none the less. I wiped it away as soon as possible but the liquid seeped under the screen!! I FREAKED went online and found this forum. Followed instructions (Salt, in a dry place and leave it for a few days) and now it is gone.....not a mark. NOTHING to show just how close I came to being strangled by my mother. Thank you^__^

Well if that isn't a good dose of karmic justice I don't know what is.
