so my gf was using my ibook g3 and shut it down normally she says. we then went to turn it on and we will hear the chime but then it will get stuck on that first gray screen, nothing else comes up, no spinning no nothing. hard drive is not making any different noise, i just dont know whats up

r u dumb>? or was that a joke? i can't tell because jokes are usually funny, obviously i have a problem and i dont need jokes i need to know how to fix it

Whoa, a little harsh there. I doubt you'll get very far on this forum... especially without a "please". This forum is a privilege, not a right.

But... One thing to try, if possible, would be to boot from your OS disc. I am nowhere near an Apple expert, but it seems like you could try some things from there to see if it would work (e.g. you could repair permissions, check the hard drive for errors, etc etc etc ). Once the disc is in the drive, reboot and hold down the "c" key.
