Help - "The Hotmail POP server “pop3.live.com” rejected the password"

I have had the same problem on and off ever since i got my macbook but i think i found THE solution. Sometimes when you hotmail gets hacked or you don't go onto their hotmail often enough because your using mail they will spit the dummy and freeze your account. So as i read earlier about changing your password i went on to hotmail sign in and it told me it had been hacked and i needed to change my password then i did, they sent me a text to confirm. I then changed typed my password into mail and it worked. HOTMAIL MAY BE FREEZING YOUR ACCOUNT SO CHECK!!!

It's *not* a Mail polling issue. It's hotmail's bug.

Guys it's nothing to do with 'update interval' in Mail.

It seems to be to do with changing your password when logged into the hotmail.com website renders your pop3 access to hotmail dead.

This happened to me with my Android phone. Had great pop3 access to hotmail, as soon as logged in on my Mac and changed the pw, I could no longer get pop. Not just on my Android phone, but in Mail on Mac too it turns out..

Hotmail seems to have a serious bug which prevents access to pop if you change the password.

We need to contact MS/hotmail to get it sorted out. Does anyone know how best to contact them ?

I think I found a way to stop ejections

I have been complaining about these rejections for a year on this site. I do not understand it, but I may have stumbled on a solution, at least, for me.

It requires Lion. Take your 'keychain access' icon and lock it on your dock. That's it. Don't know why it works. (It may work in SL.) Since Lion came out, I put the icon in the dock on a hunch and have NOT had a rejection. Take it off the dock and I get rejected within a half hour.

Hope this works for as many of you as possible.

I think i got a solution.

I've had this problem for months and I couldn't find a solution anywhere. I think I got it now. Go into your hotmail account. Go to options drop down window and click on see all options. Under the My account section, there should be a link that says "Settings for POP, IMAP, and SMTP access... " Click on that to see all of the POP settings. If your settings don't match on Mail then that is your problem. Worked for me.

Just started following this thread.
My issue is SEEING my hotmail folders.

Office for Mac's Outlook specifically says you won't get folders.
Any thoughts?

Mac Mail pop server wants a shorter password

Every few minutes, my Mail rejects my Hotmail password and says "The Hotmail POP server “pop3.live.com” rejected the password for user ______". I looked it up on google and apparently hotmail may be set up to reject passwords or deny POP access if the polling rate is too fast... I'm not sure what's going on. I click "remember password in keychain" every time but it pops up every hour at least. It's driving me insane, but I really like the mail app. Help?

With Mac Mail, there's a weird thing that only lets a 14 character or fewer password through when checking Windows Live or Hotmail. shorten the password and it's all good.

Locked out

I too have been locked out of my account and can't retrieve my mail. I have of course, tried to to contact someone to unlock my account and all they want is money!! Does anyone know who to contact or what I can do to unlock my mail???? When I called one place, they said that someone had tried to hack my account….no…that was me trying to get into my mail!! It won't take my password and I can't change anything to make it work (in keychain) unless of course I'm doing it wrong…lol Can someone help me please??
